Our kid's 4. For his last two birthdays we've rented play spaces - carefully because the price can vary a lot. One of his friends rented a bowling alley which was an absolute hoot for all concerned.
We've invited everybody because that seems to be the MO. We try and mentally soften the bill by reminding ourselves that the high price is essentially the price of my boy attending all of his friends' parties. For his 5th he's gonna take a smaller group to the movies or something similarly smaller and cheaper.
I think there was a bit of pressure to do something different. I wouldn't lose sleep over that - the kids certainly won't.
If he wasn't a winter baby we'd do a picnic in the park with a little entertainment and music but being city folks, it's hard to relocate indoors if the weather doesn't hold.
