I would think most people would use something similar vs. pro forma tax returns that I was envisioning, but I also would just use software or a spreadsheet that already exists, since there are so many of them. I used to develop my own tax prep software too, but similarly decided that there was no point in reinventing the wheel - and probably making mistakes along the way.
I don't like blackbox results where I have no way to verify methodology or accuracy.

And while I'll look at other people's spreadsheets for ideas, I prefer to roll my own. Writing my own provides a mush deeper understanding of the issues.
I have no way to verify the accuracy of any software I develop myself relative to well-established freeware or commercial software that has undergone "testing" by thousands or more users. The more complicated the software I'm trying to develop, the more likely I am to make mistakes and the less likely I am to find them.
I agree generally with respect to software, but we're talking about spreadsheets here, and relatively simple spreadsheets at that.
