I was recently working on a remote job site in the southwest. One of the trucks came in with worn out brakes after crossing several mountain passes to get there. He could not find a shop in the (fairly large, for the area) town that could do the work for two weeks. He bought the parts and did the job himself on the job site, in the snow.
This brings up an important point — you need to learn to properly drive a larger vehicle. Going over mountain passes requires you to learn to downshift to the lower gears (even in an automatic transmission) so that you don’t just use the brakes on long downhill sections which wears out the brakes. Most likely, the guy that had to replace his brakes was not using engine braking effectively and that is why there was a need to replace his brakes. I’ve driven thousands of miles towing trailers over mountains in the west (CO, UT, WY, MT, NV, AZ, CA) and never had premature brake wear but my father taught me from a young age how to use the lower gears for braking.
