Personal Finance (Not Investing) • How are we doing? Mid-age net worth

We are 3-4 years behind you, have slightly higher income but our NW is lower then yours (2.4-2.6) .. add to that I feel the exact same in my job.

Our NW could have been higher, but we have higher expenses (two private school and we travel a lot).

But more to the fatigue at work part. I was there last year. I was only 40. I felt under appreciated, although well paid with great benifits but these things didn't matter. I could see that I was losing interest and without getting that ego boost from my immediate management, missing out on two promotions, I felt very depressed. Yes I am using the big d word because that is what it was depression.

I simply slept in bed, took meetings from my bed, never let the kids see it or never dropped anything from my house chores but it hurt. I had to work it out and what snapped me is a simple statement from my dad. "You have a great wife, you have amazing kids, you are financially stable, it's your own mind playing tricks and it's up to you if or when you will see this reality and feel normal". I did not take any medication, but kept thinking about what he had said.

FF a year later, I am still reluctantly doing my job and often feel annoyed but I look at the bigger picture and have decided to grind it out. I have started to put feelers out see if I can get a higher pay and better responsibility job. Nothing so far :) so I keep grinding.

If all goes well, we will be in or near our 50s when we have teen agers and my hope is we would have saved enough that one of us might take a back seat and be more available for them. Our problem is the private school is a 60-70k drain for two and the second one has just started attending KG.

So I feel, a. You are doing great, b. looks like the burnt out feeling is more common but please keep going. Enjoy the younger minds at work, get in the trenches with them occasionally, while still trying to make meaningful connection with your higher ups. That last part is at least what I focus on these days when I am at work.

Cheers!
