The director obviously lied to you, and probably will again when he reports the results of his "discussion" with the editor-in-chief. Even if you accept the job, you'll be working for a liar. Is the job worth that?Thank you everyone for helping me navigate this situation. Your perspectives are really helping me.
I met with the department director who now has to discuss things with our editor-in-chief (who might say a 4/5's position is unacceptable and violates company policy). He told me he discovered from the company handbook that full-time status at our company requires 40 hours, no less.
But during our meeting I indicated I was unwilling to alter the parameters of our original deal. I'm feeling less attached to the job now. He said they don't need a contractor but they know I have the skill set of the person leaving whose position I'm filling (they worked there for over 40 years).
Despite my age, I do seem to be employable.
