Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Trust Services: Fidelity v Schwab v Vanguard v other

1. If you have a 2 fund portfolio, I suspect you know the benefits of a simple, low cost portfolio. I have no confidence in >95% of financial planners / portfolio managers to do something similar, whether it is your banks, trust company, Fidelity, or Schwab. I have some confidence that Vanguard will do the right thing with respect to a simple, low cost portfolio.

2. You may want to look at your pre-tax retirement assets. If entirely pre-tax, with a 10 year payout, this amounts to $500K/year for 10 years, which will be almost entirely taxed at the highest tax bracket. I have been doing aggressive Roth conversions to avoid the high tax on the 10 year distribution and associated tax drag on yearly interest once distributions are made. The Roth conversions may not be an attractive option in your case if you have a high income.... or maybe it is worthwhile, if you never expect to be in lower tax brackets.

3. The cost associated with managing a trust really chaps my hide. VG charges on the order of $50K for a $10M trust. And they appear to be the cheapest. Maybe I am ignorant, but I can't imagine it takes 100 man-hours per year x $500/hr. And some others charging a multiple of that just looks like a gravy train. For what it is worth, VG is my choice to manage our trust after we pass.
