It's been mentioned already, but I agree with joint compound. You have to wait longer, but it sands really really well. There are several spots where I literally can't find where a hole was after I used joint compound, waited a day, sanded it and added more joint compound, then waited a day and sanded it and then painted it. So yes it takes longer, but most of the time is just waiting, not active time.
