Personal Consumer Issues • T5 engineering school or in-state T35 with full-ride?

I am going to disagree with most of the comments here. I have a top 5 eng degree, top 5 masters in engineering, and top 3 MBA. There are a lot of folks that say "I went to state school and did fine." The definition of fine is relative. I'm a fortune 100 exec and will pull down $1.4m this year.

- Going to a top 5 undergrad has opened a lot of doors for me. Not just for my first job, but again and again and again. Even 20+ years after I graduated. This notion that your undergraduate brand only helps with your first job is something I find to be absurd.

- Going to a top 5 engineering school for a masters had no real impact in my opinion. It probably depends on major but as a CS major getting a masters after getting an undergrad from a top 5 is a waste of time and money.

- getting a top 3 mba has helped me tremendously. Similar to my point about my undergrad, it's a gift that keeps giving.

- where I went to college even helped me secure a spot an elite private school for my kid. I knew someone who went to the same college as me, they knew another that was on the board of trustees, and introduced me. We had a 30 min chat where 15 min were reminiscing about college. Then he pressed the magic red button with admissions.

I'm not saying any of this is fair but it's the experience I've had. I'm now in a position where I spend 90k a year on private schools for my kids and honestly I don't even miss the 90k. I have no concerns about paying for college now. At my income level my total comp goes up 150-200k per year because they keep giving me stock grants every year.

My wife went to a very well regarded state flagship on the west coast and a top 100 law school. She makes in a year what I make in a month.
+1

I went to top 10 undergrad and top 7 MBA

Currently negotiating a SVP job offer at a publicly traded tech company. Their opening offer is $800k TC.

I’m 37
