Personal Finance (Not Investing) • choosing a part D Medicare plan?

Reviving this thread in September 2024, thinking ahead for calendar year 2025.

Can you switch to a more robust drug plan each year without medical underwriting? It’s my understanding that you can’t switch Part B supplement plans to a more robust plan without underwriting. If I want to go from Plan N to Plan G, that requires underwriting. Even from one Plan G to another Plan G with a different insurer. It appears that this is NOT the case with the Part D drug plan choices. And that the maximum out of pocket is $2000, so if I buy a cheapie drug plan but end up needing something expensive, I can just pay the $2000 and buy a more robust drug plan next year.

Do I understand all this correctly?
Partially. Once you hit the out-of-pocket max ($2000 starting in 2025), the drug plan will cover the full cost of drugs that are on the drug plan's formulary. Moreover, the part D insurers can change the formulary mid-year.
