Depending on the time of year you’re going, rent a car! In the fall shoulder season after the summer crowds leave but before the snow starts (which is beautiful and can be great for hiking) it’s really easy to drive between towns once you’ve got your destinations planned out. I’m partial to Germany/Austria, but you really can’t go wrong.
+1 This is what we did. Arrived in Zurich, and spent a day or two in around there. Then drove our rental through the country to Geneva, sightseeing along the way... Mt. Pilatus, Lucerne, Bern, Zermatt, Geneva... home

A beautiful drive. Lots of stops.
