Most often, my advice is to keep the historically low mortgage and make do with what you have unless the family really hates the current situation.
The key difference I see versus most of the others is that you have significant assets where you can do what you want.
We are a family of 6 with a home of similar size to what you are considering. Do you really need such a large home for your smaller family or might you consider a better location / other?
Ultimately, do what makes your family happy. You can afford it and will not likeky regret it.
