Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Eye Exam Out of Network - Hit with MASSIVE Bill

Recently I took my daughter to her first ever eye exam. Normally we would go to Target Optical, Costco, etc. pay around $100 for an exam and be done with it. As it was her first appointment ever, I figure I'd take her to the Optometrist that's part of our massive healthcare "chain" since it's a slightly better/calmer environment.

I (stupidly) did not check if they were in-network with our vision insurance. I was never even asked about vision insurance at the clinic.

Well, I received a bill for $600 from the clinic for a basic eye exam as they ran the claim through my health insurance on file and it obviously came back as NOT COVERED. The clinic is not in-network with our vision insurance.

This is really infuriating. I realize ultimately it was my mistake, but why am I getting charged the "insurance billed" price rather than some sort of cash/uninsured price? I know I can submit it as an out of network reimbursement and get maybe $30-40 back.

I am going to call this week but I always like to be armed with as much information as possible beforehand, especially any strategies people here have used, before I reach out.

Much appreciated everyone - tough weekend for us and receiving this bill on a Saturday at 4pm didn't help!
Call tomorrow and tell them you will just pay the cash price. That has always worked for me in these scenarios. I'd be surprised if they didn't accept your payment.
