I think I see. The original investment amount of the traditional was ~15k or in that range. Would hurt but not the end of the world. The rollover amount from the first company 401k was higher by a fair amount. Now I understand the issue is actually going to be proving that...If you assume no basis in the assets, then the consequence is that you'd pay income tax on that amount twice. Upon withdrawal.
If you're okay with that, then see if the receiving 401k will accept the money. They might not if there is a shadow of a doubt about the provenance of the money.

@placeholder I have no memory of that... I'll have to go back and see if I have anything left. As I said a long time ago and really don't think I have the returns from this period. Will again. Maybe Fidelity can help with some history but a long time for them as well.
