Many of us get poorer results if we try to do remodels ourselves. I leave things like tiling to the experts that do it everyday.
Apparently not true of Bogleheads who, when I've offered this point before, seem to do everything correctly on the first try. I've done considerable damage - as recently as a few months ago - in the process of d-i-y, but never injured myself seriously, so that's a plus. Some tasks I've learned to do better after the first time, but will never have a need to do those specific tasks again. Other tasks I still can't do properly after multiple attempts.
A freind of mine tiled his own floor - grout cracked and tiles came up - not to mention the pattern wasn't flush with one wall. He had to pay to have the job done over. He said it looked easier on YouTube.

It is funny how most on the internet are able to do everything themselves better than an expert - yet that isn't my experience with people I know. I guess it is the folks I know.
