Personal Consumer Issues • Gardening 2024 post-mortem

Been hot and dry. My 8X20 garden has produced a decent amount but fewer than last years tomatoes. Some of the plants are 8 foot tall in 6 foot round cages but blossom end rot is getting ahead of me although I used a spray supplement that was supposed to alleviate the problem. Last year was the first time using the soil in many years. Cucumbers are down by at least half. Pumpkins failed to even germinate. Lettuce and spinach are a bust. Got a couple squash before the powdery mildew got on the leaves.

Last year I got a fair amount of tomato blight. At the end of the season I sprayed the cages down with a concentrated bleach. Probably will do again as the blight is far less of a problem this year. I did dig in a lot of leaves in the fall as well as used some of the compost made from kitchen scraps.
