Personal Investments • Retiring early: How much cash to hold to stomach market downturns?

DW and I are close to 50, and we plan to retire in 5/6 years.

Starting in 2023, I start tracking every expense, so we will know the yearly cost of current life style when we retire then.

This cost + medical cost (ACA) + additional travel budget + tax with adjusted inflation is the estimated retirement yearly cost.

My plan is to hold 5 years of such cost in cash(tbill ladder), the rest are all in stock, and re-balance stock into cash within the 5 years period. I called it 5 years firewall protection.

This is just my plan, and 1/3/5/7/10 years are all personal decision.
Thanks for sharing your plan. What percentage of your total portfolio is the 5 years in t bills? No bond funds in your portfolio?
