Green Giant is a specific cultivar. Did they give you the nursery tags? What is the sun exposure like?

Three different certified arborists have told me (about various shrubs) that there is NO case where natural rainfall is sufficient for a shrub that was planted in the last year to 18 months. The root ball needs to be kept wet for the summer, especially in a hot climate. With mulch, I would water heavily at least once a week, without mulch I would water heavily twice a week. Heavily means until puddles occur, which last at least a few minutes after ceasing watering.

A good nursery would "improve" the soil before planting new shrubs.
