I would guess my shops had done at least 1000 Toyota oil changes per year over the past 40 odd years and I am with AMD on this one. 5k oil changes will pay off IF you are going to keep your car for 120,000 miles or more or if you do heavy duty driving...like short runs, cold weather, or towing. The 0w8 oils that they are using now are like pouring water into the crankcase...I put some into the freezer the other day and it still pours out like milk. We have a lot of customers with well over 250K on Toyotas and no problems. If you cant afford the oil change I get it...but unless its an issue do 5K oil changes...and YES..the oil brand does matter some..most major brands are fine, it all about the additive packages really. We drive Land Cruisers in our family and I run Mobil One Extended in all of them. Oil is cheap, cars are not. Wish ya the best.Came here to post this. He's endearingly awkward, and I trust him more than any other car guy on YouTube. The Car Care Nut on YouTube posted a video on this exact question -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TevK-u3vkx4. Summary: while you may get by changing every 10k miles, paying extra to change every 5k miles is good insurance for a longer lasting engine. Of course, it's easier if you change your own oil as I like to do. BTW, Car Care Nut is a great follow on YouTube -- a former master mechanic at a Toyota dealership.
