Personal Consumer Issues • At what point do you replace your HVAC system?

You’re more likely to get hit by a car than eaten by a shark.
Ok, probably not.
But probability of your scenario is pretty low.
Likelier HVAC will die one day and you’ll get a new one in a day or 2. Your world won’t end.
I get your point, but I think the probability is higher than you'd imagine. It's not like these HVAC systems will tell you when they're going to stop working. You're just going to wake up one day and it'll be broken. That's ok if the temperatures are mild, but not if it's 95 degrees or 10 degrees.

And yes, you can get someone to come replace your system in a day or two, but there's no way you're going to be able to do your research and shop around that quickly. You'll be at the mercy of whatever company has the time/equipment in stock. And if they know you're desperate, you're going to pay a huge premium.

Having just replaced my HVAC equipment, I can tell you that it's a ton of work to find a reputable company that charges reasonable rates. Plus, the equipment that you may want isn't always in stock.

I know it's not the most Boglehead thing to do, but I think proactively replacing HVAC when it's nearing the end of its useful life is more prudent than waiting until it's broken and you're desperate.
