A Cinematic tsunami that washed away my tears and left me revitalized. A true tear jerker and it’s the one for the ages!

Dunki isn't a movie, yes, you read that right. It’s a real life experience that many of us faced as immigrants.

I walked into a local theater here in Houston expecting a grand spectacle especially because this is Raju Hirani directing it. We know what he did with 3 Idiots, Munnabhai MBBS and PK to name a few. What I got was so much more. It was a tidal wave of human stories, each one crashing against the next, forging a symphony of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering love for one another to accomplish our financial dreams. I came to USA as a child so I cannot directly relate but in this movie Raju finds a way for me to do just that.

From the opening scene, I was hooked. Dunki doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of human displacement, the agonizing choices one has to make when faced with the unthinkable.

Who here remembers when your first family member travelled to America/England? What was the feeling like dropping them off at the airport? How did you feel as an immigrant going away?

The performances are nothing short of phenomenal. Every actor, from the seasoned veterans to the fresh faces, pours their heart and soul on to the screen especially Taapsee Pannu, she lives her character as if it was happening in real-time. TAAPSEE IS HER! What a performance. Salute to her. Shah Rukh Khan brings out his vintage lover boy acting of the 90s once again and this time he doesn’t have to carry the entire film on his shoulders. This is a complete team effort. Vicky Kaushal is special in a special appearance and Boman Irani was the best fit as an English teacher.

I laughed with them, I cried with them (A LOT). I wasn’t sure if I was at a funeral or a cinema hall. I felt their every victory and defeat as if they were my own. You don't need to understand Hindi to feel the anguish in a mother's eyes as she bids farewell to her son going to England.

As the credits rolled, and the tears subsided, I was left with a profound sense of gratitude. Dunki is a film that will stay with me for life just like DDLJ and Kal Ho Na Ho to name a few. This is Rajkumar Hirani’s best work to date. The flaws are the songs except ‘Lutt Putt Gaya’.

So, if you're looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between, Dunki is it. Just be prepared to bring a box of tissues, because this one is an extreme tearjerker in the best possible way. It's a movie that will leave you washed clean, your heart overflowing with a renewed sense of hope.

From a white Jewish American's perspective ... 3 idiots was spectacular! For those who have not seen it ... see it! I work as a physician. Nearly every time an Indian family comes in I say "I have to ask ... have you seen 3 idiots?" Every single one says yes and it's spectacular!"
3 Idiots was Rajkumar Hirani’s best work until Dunki. It’s debatable but Dunki is based on real life events. Watch it at your local theater. It’s in English subtitles.
