It’s not clear to me how the water damage occurred. Can you clarify?
Your pan has a safety switch that should have turned the unit off if water accumulated in the pan from the clogged drain.
The water can overflow the pan if:
1. the pan tilts under the water weight and water sloshes over the side of the pan. This happens if the pan is not level or rocks because the support underneath is not level.
2. The pan itself has a leak.
3. The safety float switch isn’t working or if it is installed at an improper height.
An undersized pan would seem to mean that the pan dimensions are smaller than the unit and leaks from the unit fall outside of the pan and its drain.
Was the pan full of water or not?
