Recently bought an all-in-one policy covering medical issues including evacuation AND cancellation, delay, lost baggage etc for a 10 day trip to the Canadian Rockies for $157 thru Travel Insured International. It was recommended by The Trip Insurance Store. The medical part of it includes emergency medical evacuation, medical repatriation, repatriation of remains, hospital of choice, medical escort, transportation of children, bedside visit transportation to join the insured. The plan does not exclude preexisting conditions. The coverage is up to $500,000. (Maybe it should be one million?) Separately provides up to $100,000 to cover accident and sickness medical expense. I also have healthcare insurance in addition to this that would provides some coverage in other countries, but not medical evacuation back to the US in most instances. I think it would provide coverage to move me to the nearest facility someone other than me deems adequate.People elect to get Medjet because the medical evacuation coverage under all-in-one policies and credit cards is limited. When traveling outside the US, I purchase travel insurance mainly to help with medical issues, especially medical evacuation. Medical evacuation or repatriation of remains back to one's home country can be very expensive, and standard healthcare insurance won't cover it in most instances. The admittedly limited research I've done has led me to tentatively conclude that a decent policy covering medical issues including evacuation AND cancellation, delay, lost baggage etc costs just a little more than a decent policy covering the aforementioned medical issues alone. We also have Medjet (directly, not through Steve). You get a nice discount with a multi year policy and an AARP membership. Thanks everyone. Steve has been very nice and has asked me all the questions you mentioned. We definitely don't need trip interruption insurance, and it's just the two of us, so no family at home to be concerned about. While I'm happy enough to lose the cost of our trip should things go awry, I wouldn't be too happy to pay for medical evacuation or medical care if some unforseen thing happens while out of the country. Sounds like an annual GeoBlue and/or Medjet would fit the bill for us - I was just surprised at Steve's hesitance about those.
Most of the all-in-one policies (or credit cards) that cover cancellation, delay, lost baggage, etc. and also cover medical evacuation will provide medical evacuation to the nearest acceptable facility that the insurer determines can provide appropriate medical care. That’s it. That’s where are you going to have any surgery that needs to be done. You are there until you are well enough to fly home on a commercial flight (any subsequent hotel and airfare are also may be on you).
Medjet will bring you home once you are hospitalized. If you are hospitalized anywhere in the world, Medjet will then bring you to the hospital of your choice back home. You decide.
Some questions to ask about medical evacuation insurance:
Does the plan allow you to be evacuated to the hospital of your choosing or just the closest appropriate facility?
Who makes the decision if you will be evacuated?
Does the plan exclude any preexisting conditions?
Does the plan place a cap on how much coverage it will provide for a medical evacuation?
Does the plan have age restrictions?
It should be noted that I estimated non-refundables to be about $2000 when shopping for a policy. The purchase price will be higher for trips with a larger non-refundable amount.
Not sure how the above compares with Medjet.
