It sounds like a band-aid solution (to me) to get the ionizer and not really addressing the problem. Around 99% of HVAC units don't have these ionizers and yet don't have this odor problem.
I would check if the condensation line is partially plugged, it happens all the time water doesnt drain like it should. I basically have to clean mine every year because it gets goopy. Usually it's just partially plugged but doesn't let the water fully drain like it should. You can stick like a bottle brush down the line or get a shop vac attachment at where it exits. Maybe pour some vinegar down the PVC line. I have a gallo gun that shoots CO2 to clear plugged lines.
You can also buy tablets that you drop in the tray that help with odors.

Honestly, the tech/company that does a "check up" but is too lazy to actually check what your concern is doesn't sound like someone I would want to work with. It just reinforces why I think these "tune up" type services are usually a rip off for the consumer.
