Personal Finance (Not Investing) • 1040X for Form 2210 Annualized Income Method

I agree with todd that Form 1040-X should not be filed to request an abatement of an estimated tax penalty, because Form 1040-X does not contain a line that shows the original or revised penalty, so the 1040-X would not show any numerical changes.

Form 843 is probably the correct form to use. However, I believe that an abatement of the penalty can probably be obtained without filing Form 843, simply by mailing to the IRS a brief explanatory letter requesting the abatement along with Form 2210 that shows the annualized income.
Thanks again for your advice!

To add another quirk, it seems that I actually duplicated one of my 1099-INT forms so could file 1040X for refund of tax owed (~$250).

Could I include a form 2210 with that amended return and ask for a refund of the penalty also?

Or would that be too confusing for the IRS?

Thanks!
