I assume you aren't doing this in person? The best way to stop most scams are to see the place first. I would also suggest seeing the place first because photos do not come close to telling the full story. The most common scam I saw six years ago was the scammer would ask to run your credit report first. They would direct you to a scam site and would collect your CC info (you had to pay for report) and personal info as a double bonus.
After a short while you can pick out most of the scams. Poor/few photos, style of house not typical for area, priced way under market.
As mentioned above do has much Google stalking/open source Intel you can on place and landlord. Also if there is a management company in the middle check them out. Some management companies had absolutely horrible reviews in my area.
But bottom line to me is see the place first and who you are dealing with first. I would even to a short term rental first to able to do this if necessary.
