I lived in the region and visited all those countries on multiple occasions. We're thinking about visiting SE Asia this summer (3-4 weeks in the month of June) with our kids aged 15 and 12. Looking for suggestions on where to go, places to skip that may not be kid-appropriate, what activities to do that our kids would also enjoy, etc..
We prefer to stay in one spot for longer (3-7 days), so looking to narrow down to 4, maybe 5 hops at the most. We enjoy hiking, nature, beaches, food and cultural spots (temples, museums, etc.).
We're considering Thailand and Indonesia (Bali), but open to other suggestions. We will be flying in to Singapore as our starting point, so planning to spend 2-3 days there.
I've heard June is the beginning of the low/rainy season in the region, but this is the only time we have given the school schedule in the US. How rainy does it get? Chances of extreme weather and related disruptions? Is it a minor annoyance or something that could completely botch sight-seeing? Are most of the beaches swimmable during this time? Any other tips/suggestions.
Thanks for your suggestions.
-There is no scheduling around rain (monsoon) and inclement in that region. Expect that it will be similarly hot and humid as Houston.
-Generalizing entire countries here, but Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand have clearer and more swimmable beaches than Vietnam
-Cultural spots are broadly similar in those places, none really standout, and none are kid-inappropriate.
-Nature and hiking are more in the highlands areas, such as Da Lat in Vietnam or Chiang Mai in Thailand
-Some destinations are more backpacker-dense like Bali, and not perhaps what you prefer
Singapore is most modern and developed. Thailand is the friendliest and my recommendation for first time travelers. Malaysia has gems too.
