Why are you retiring?!?I think most Bogleheads have fairly specialized jobs and are good at it. As such we get some enjoyment out of our job and in particular the feeling of doing something that is: 1) challenging to us and 2) useful for the world.
Now in retirement we typically take away 2) and do stuff which is only enjoyable to ourselves and probably isn't useful for society. This is as it should be.
But the idea of getting up each day and doing stuff I like to do has me a bit worried. It just seems morally wrong particularly as I'll retire in my early 50s and no longer will be contributing to society.
I hopefully explained this well and wonder if others feel the same?
Making it even more complicated I'd like to do some of what I did for my career (research and development) but this time produce no product but it seems stupid to do research no one uses purely for my own enjoyment (which it will provide). It also makes one feel like a loser to be frank!
Some people have reasons why they want to retire.
Others prefer to keep working.
Both are perfectly valid choices.
For some odd reason each group seems to think there is something wrong with the other group's decision.
Instead of denigrating those that choose to retire as non-productive drains on society, you could simply choose to keep working if that is what gives your life meaning.
Just because other people are retiring for their own reason is no reason for you to feel you need to do the same.
