I have a garden, but also have 3 large patio planters that I put tomato plants in. I usually get one cherry and two Roma plants. Romas do quite well in containers. The planters have holes at the bottom and a dish to retain some water; they are brick-colored plastic pots that you can buy at any garden store. I water every other day unless it's super hot. I have tomato cages. I just bent the bottoms so that they would fit into the planters.
I also grow some spices in smaller containers: basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme and cilantro. They all do well except the basil needs a lot of water and cilantro thrives early in the season but not so much later.
These plants get sun all day except late afternoon. Good luck!
