Personal Finance (Not Investing) • How do you re-allocate investments when you get closer to retirement?

Say all your investments are essentially 100% stocks split 50/50 in 401k and individual brokerage. When getting closer to retirement, do you just adjust your 401k investments to be more bonds since you don't get taxed from any transfers between funds in them, or do you sell your stocks/etfs in your brokerage to buy bonds so both 401k and brokerage have a similar allocation of stocks/bonds?
