Is the short term gain net of the long term loss?
You had a long term loss which you say was appropriately applied to adjust the cost basis of the replacement shares. (Let’s say that was $100).
If you had never had the wash sale, you would have had a short term gain of let’s say $300 on the replacement shares.
But since you had the wash sale, the $300 gain is now a $200 short term gain.
Is that how they treated it? If so, that’s correct. You can’t convert a short term gain to a long term gain just by creating a partial wash sale with long term losses.
The W shows up on the replacement shares in their system until the replacement shares are sold.
It sounds like you are saying they are showing the entire short term gain on the replacement shares and no long term loss at all. I’d be surprised if they are doing that.
