Methinks you are trying to game a system that is far more advanced than you.

Selling your intermediate bond fund and splitting the funds 50/50 into a short term and long term bond fund is probably not going to amount to much of anything. It likely won't hurt you much other than transactional costs and bid/ask spreads, but you aren't likely to gain much by it, either.

Just remember to save and invest a decent bit of your money, pick a stocks/bond mix according to your risk tolerance and investment horizon, ensure that your bond duration appropriately matches your investment horizon, and then leave it alone.
