My parents were conservative with their spending and were still saving a big chunk of their income in their early retirement years. As far as I could tell, they didn’t feel deprived. Although my father never did buy a Jaguar — his dream car.Fair point. Maybe I should rephrase. I could live a much more lavish lifestyle and still be well below the safe withdrawal rate.Everybody spends money on things that they don’t strictly need. It is just a question of degree.Having lived frugally my whole life, first out of necessity then out of habit, I now find it difficult to spend money on anything I don't need, even though I easily could and probably should.
But I got a large inheritance as a result. And part of me thinks it’s a shame that they didn’t indulge themselves more. So I am being more indulgent, both for myself and in gifting to their grandchildren. And there’s always charity.
