I'm not sure if I was considered living in poverty, but my parents made around $50k combined with 6 kids in the 90s. My parents definitely had EBT and we got reduced or free lunch prices. We drank powdered milk (which I loved, at the time) and made pasta with ground beef and ketchup.
The thing that got me out of "poverty" was going to a state school for civil engineering. Despite my parents wanting me to go into the military, I went to college, made it through classes despite getting my first ever C's in a few classes. I married my girlfriend that was going to college for Nursing, and had ambitions to get her master's to become a family nurse practitioner.
